Privacy policy
Caret doesn't collect any information about you. There's no Caret account, no analytics, no ads, no tracking and no third-party code.
What stays on your device
- Saved posts, notes and tags, reading history, and what Caret learns about the topics you like. Deleting the app deletes them.
- If you sign in to Hacker News, Caret keeps only the sign-in Hacker News sends back, in your device's Keychain. Your password isn't stored.
What syncs through your iCloud
Your topic choices, muted sites and words, hidden people and reading settings sync between your devices through Apple's iCloud, inside your own iCloud account. The developer can't see them. Turn off iCloud for Caret in your device settings to stop syncing.
Who Caret talks to
- Hacker News, through its official API and its search service (hn.algolia.com), to load stories and comments.
- news.ycombinator.com, only when you sign in, vote, comment, edit, delete, flag or favorite. Your password goes only to Hacker News, over an encrypted connection.
- DuckDuckGo's icon service (icons.duckduckgo.com), which receives a story's website name to show its small icon. You can turn site icons off in Caret's settings.
- The website of any article you open, as with any browser. When you save a story, Caret also fetches the article's text from that website so you can search it later.
Caret is not affiliated with Y Combinator or Hacker News. Content you see comes from Hacker News and its users.

Reporting and hiding content
Stories and comments in Caret come from Hacker News. To deal with something objectionable:
- Hide the person: hold (or right-click) a comment or story and choose Hide. You won't see their stories or comments again on any of your devices. Undo it in Tailor.
- Report it: choose Report on a story or comment. Caret hides it right away and offers to email the Hacker News moderators (hn@ycombinator.com), who can remove it from Hacker News.
- Flag it: if you're signed in and your Hacker News account can flag, Report also offers Flag, which flags it on Hacker News directly.
- Mute words and sites in Tailor to keep matching stories out of your feeds.
You can also email adam@amplifi.studio about anything you see in Caret.
